Veteran defenders pens new Birmingham City contract

Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City have confirmed that club captain Paul Robinson has signed a new contract with the club. The club captain has penned a one-year extension to his deal, which was due to expire this summer.

The 38-year-old is the current longest-serving member of the team at St Andrews, and manager Harry Redknapp has tied him down to another season. Although he may not necessarily play every game, his experience will surely be vital at certain points over the coming year at Birmingham.

Over the previous campaign, the former West Bromwich Albion defender often assisted Richard Beale with the Under-23 structure at the club. It is believed that a similar arrangement will remain in place, although he primarily remains a first-team player and that will be his number one concern once more.

The veteran has been with the club since September 2012, and has played 171 times for the Blues ever since. Over the past season, he played a further 25 games as injuries across the defence called him into action.  After barely featuring before the New Year, Robinson started practically every game for Birmingham in February, March and April as his side battled against the drop.

Redknapp took over from Gianfranco Zola with three games to spare, collecting six points, which proved to be enough to keep them in the division for another season. The plan now is very much to start looking up the table, rather than down. Robinson becomes 39 later this year, so there is every chance this could be his final season as a professional player.
