Scottish giants complete deal for Town midfielder

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have completed the signing of Ipswich midfielder Kundai Benyu, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

The Scottish giants have beaten interest from Tottenham Hotspurs, West Ham and Aston Villa to sign the 19-year-old attacking midfielder.

Benyu spent half of last season on loan with Vanarama National League side Aldershot Town following a falling out with Blues boss Mick McCarthy. However the 19-year-old’s temporary time at Aldershot proved a success, with the tricky midfielder netting five times during 23 appearances as the Shots reached the play-offs.

Ipswich tried to persuade the young midfielder to sign a new deal with the Suffolk side, however a contract extension could not be agreed and a tribunal was forced to arrange a compensation fee.

Benyu will link up with the Scottish giants on July 1st before flying out to meet his new team mates for their pre-season training camp in Austria.

Speaking to Celtic’s Club website, Kundai Benyu said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Celtic. It’s a massive honour to sign for the Scottish champions and one of the world’s truly great clubs.

“It’s also a great opportunity for me to continue to develop as a footballer under Brendan Rodgers.

“I’m looking forward to meeting up with my new Celtic team-mates. I know there’s a lot of hard work ahead of me but I am ready for this, I’m looking forward to the challenge and I can’t wait to get started.”

The young midfielder now switches Portman Road for Celtic Park on a four-year contract as Brendan Rodgers’ Scottish giants seek a 49th – and eighth consecutive – Scottish Premiership title.
