Oxford United chairman gives hint on managerial appointment date

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, Oxford United chairman Darryl Eales is confident that the club will have a new manager in place early next week. Interviews are still ongoing to find the permanent replacement to Michael Appleton, who departed to become assistant to Craig Shakespeare at Leicester City.

Along with two other club directors, Eales is overseeing the process to appoint a new manager at the Kassam Stadium. Oxford have a six-man shortlist up and running, including one name already on the payroll at the football club.

In recent days, the likes of Pep Clotet, Frank Lampard and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink have been heavily touted for the job. Clotet, former assistant manager to Garry Monk at both Swansea City and most recently Leeds United, is still the current favourite for the gig. Sky Sports reported that Chelsea legend Lampard is under consideration for the role, which would be his first coaching role since retiring from playing. Hasselbaink has managed in the EFL at both QPR and Burton Albion in recent years. In recent days he has been working as a TV pundit covering the Confederations Cup.

Eales saying that the U’s are near to reaching a position where an announcement can be made,

“We are 50 per cent of the way there.

“We will try to complete the final interviews by the weekend and try to make an appointment early next week.

“When the interviews are complete, we will have 24 or 48 hours of reflection and then come together as a board to discuss the merits.

“There has been an absolutely superb quality of candidates.

“Every interview I have done, I have come out thinking “I’ll appoint them”.”
