New deal for Premier League striker amid Aston Villa and Middlesbrough interest

The Daily Mail understands that Southampton striker Sam Gallagher will sign a new four-year contract at St Mary’s Stadium. The 21-year-old impressed out on loan at Blackburn Rovers last season, and has been attracting interest from Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

The Sky Bet Championship duo will therefore be disappointed in their quest to add the hardworking front man to their squads this summer. Perhaps a loan deal could still be an option, although the player will want to impress new Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino and stamp his mark on the first-team scene with the club. Gallagher has proven himself in the league below, but couldn’t prevent Blackburn dropping into Sky Bet League One.

Gallagher, who has also had a loan spell with the MK Dons in recent years, netted 12 times for Rovers last season. He mainly played as a striker, but demonstrated his versatility but playing in a wide left role quite frequently as well. It was those goals which attracted both Steve Bruce and Garry Monk into hopefully adding him to their team for next season. Gallagher’s deal expires at the end of next season, but is set for a bumper extension with the Premier League side.

He will find competition for a starting role extremely challenging given the likes of Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini are still on the books, plus Pellegrino may wish to add more of his own players too. Therefore, a long deal is still a real option and it is one that both Aston Villa and Middlesbrough will at least look to explore if at all possible.
