Chesterfield sign ex-Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley striker

According to the Derbyshire Times, former Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley striker Chris O’Grady has signed for Chesterfield on a two-year deal.

The experienced frontman has made 400 appearances in the Football League and has featured in all three Football League divisions.

The experienced striker started his career at Leicester City and made 24 appearances for the Foxes. During his time in Leicestershire, he went out two different loan spells in two seasons to Notts County and Rushden & Diamonds.

During the January transfer window of 2007, O’Grady moved to Rotherham United on a two-and-a-half year deal worth £65,000 and the striker went on to make 51 appearances for the Millers. During his time in South Yorkshire at Rotherham, he scored 13 goals in a relatively steady two seasons.

O’Grady then moved to Oldham Athletic but failed to make a significant impact at Boundary Park. He went out on loan on three separate occasions in the same season to Bury, Bradford City and Stockport County, but only scored twice during 26 games, with those two goals during his time at Stockport County.

The striker then had a spell on loan with Rochdale during 2009 and made his move permanent on the 14th of January 2010 for an undisclosed fee. The striker scored 31 goals in 90 appearances and earned himself a move to Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of around £350,000.

O’Grady scored 9 goals in 53 appearances for the Owls and then moved to Barnsley on loan for the 2012/13 season. The six-foot-one striker then moved to Oakwell on a permanent deal for the 2013/14 season. The striker enjoyed his most prolific time at Barnsley in the league, scoring 21 goals in 56 games.

Since leaving Barnsley, O’Grady has played for Brighton & Hove Albion and had loan spells at Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and most recently Burton Albion on loan from Brighton.

The striker has experienced promotion on two occasions, with Rochdale from League Two in 2010 and with Sheffield Wednesday from League One into the Championship during 2012.

At the end of last season, Brighton released the striker following their promotion to the Premier League. It is believed that O’Grady will be Chesterfield’s highest earning player in the history of the club according to journalist Alan Biggs.
