Bolton Wanderers near deal for experienced free agent midfielder

Sky Bet Championship new boys Bolton Wanderers are poised to complete the signing of free agent midfielder Will Buckley, according to The Bolton News. The 27-year-old has been without a club since his release by relegated Sunderland at the end of last season.

Subject to a medical, he’ll be the fifth new face to enter the Macron Stadium this summer. Phil Parkinson has been busy moulding his squad together ahead of their return to the second tier, following a year away. Buckley will join a team used to winning, after they finished as runners up to Sheffield United in Sky Bet League One.

It would be fair to say that Buckley has struggled to impose himself whilst at the Stadium of Light. Having built up a big reputation for himself at Brighton & Hove Albion, he linked up with the Black Cats in 2014. He started 22 Premier League games but quickly found himself out on loan more often than not. A had a brief spell with Leeds United, and then similar spells with Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday. Injury certainly affected his playing chances with the Owls last season, but he was never first choice anyway.

One thing that Buckley does possess is plenty of experience of the Championship. With newly promoted Bolton keen to add players proven at this level, he could prove to be a shrew signing made by Parkinson. The likes of Adam Le Fondre and Mark Little have joined the Trotters this summer as Bolton look to consolidate themselves back at this level. The last time they played in this league they endured a season to forget, finishing rock bottom.
