Sunderland star striker departure to Premier League to be confirmed this weekend

The Daily Mail reports that Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe will seal a big-money move to Premier League side AFC Bournemouth this weekend. The 34-year-old is set to pen a three-year contract at Dean Court on Saturday, with the England international returning to the club he had a productive loan spell with 17 years ago.

Defoe was one of the extremely rare shining lights for Sunderland over the past season as the club were finally relegated into the Sky Bet Championship following several seasons of near misses. Defoe’s goals ultimately wasn’t enough to keep them on board, but he is now set to earn £20million over the next three years when making the move to Eddie Howe’s side.

Sunderland are of course still without a manager as their takeover talks continue to cause problems on that front. Preston North End’s Simon Grayson remains heavily linked to the role, whilst Jurgen Klinsmann recently denied any truth that he was set to be appointed. The new manager certainly won’t be shocked to see he won’t be able to call upon Defoe, given how he still holds international claims and wants to be playing at the highest level.

The Beckton-born forward scored 19 goals for the Cherries during his infamous loan move from West Ham United in the 2000/01 campaign. This proved to be the springboard to his career success, then breaking into the Hammers starting eleven and earning big moves to Tottenham Hotspur, on two occasions, and Portsmouth.

Fabio Borini is another striker that is set to exit the Stadium of Light, so the new manager at the Black Cats will certainly have to strengthen their offensive options as a point of urgency when walking through the door.
