According to the Yorkshire Post, Sheffield United have been linked with Plymouth Argyle’s Graham Carey.

The midfielder is set to become a free agent in the coming week if he does not sign fresh terms with Argyle and has been heavily tipped to move away from Home Park. There have been rumours circulating on social media that a number of sides have been interested in the midfielder after an impressive season in Devon.

The Blades have recently signed three players in George Baldock, Ched Evans and Nathan Thomas from MK Dons, Chesterfield and Hartlepool. It appears Chris Wilder may be looking to bolster his squad further though, with the news this morning that experienced defender Alex Bruce was training with the Blades.

Carey has made 241 league appearances in his career for a wide variety of clubs. The Irish midfielder began his career at Celtic, signing for the Scottish side after progressing through the youth academy at Shelbourne. Despite appearing in a Europa League game for Celtic, he never broke into the first-team for a league game in his six years at the club. Carey had three spells on loan at Bohemians, St Mirren and Huddersfield Town during his time in Glasgow and featured a combined 49 for all three sides, scoring seven goals.

St Mirren then moved to sign the player on a permanent deal and scored five goals in 63 appearances for the Scottish side over a period of two years.

Carey then moved to Plymouth Argyle in 2015 and has enjoyed two of his most successful seasons to date for the Pilgrims. The midfielder has played 98 times for Plymouth, scoring 29 goals and has been one of the clubs best players over the last two seasons.

His versatility to play up front, on either side of midfield or at full-back is one of his most useful attributes and it would make him a very attractive acquisition for the Blades and many other Championship or League One sides.

With Carey set to become a free agent, it could be an amazing deal for Chris Wilder – and an incredibly cheap one if they tried to sign the midfielder.
