Wolves look to hijack Celtic’s move for overseas left back

The Mirror reports that Sky Bet Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers are hoping to swoop for Konyaspor left back Barry Douglas. He is also wanted by Scottish treble winners Celtic but new Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is also keen on a deal too.

It has already been a summer exodus at Molineux following the decision to replace Paul Lambert with the former Porto boss. Several faces have already departed but super agent Jorge Mendes is looking to add to the roster now. Douglas made his name in Scottish football with Queens Park and then Dundee United.

Since leaving Dundee in 2013, the 27-year-old has taken a rather bizarre pathway across Europe to play his football. He had been with Polish side Lech Poznan for a few years before heading out to Konyaspor in January 2016 for an undisclosed fee. Konyaspor triumphed in the Turkish Cup last season, earning them qualification into the UEFA Europa League. Celtic soon take part in their UEFA Champions League qualifiers, plus Wolves are hoping to mount a serious push into the Premier League, giving Douglas a big decision to make.

Matt Doherty was mostly used at left back by Wolves last season, but he is right-footed and arguably more at home on the right side. That being said, he did impress in the left back position, but clearly it is a role Nuno is looking to strengthen. Douglas is valued at £750,000 by Konyaspor, and Wolves are prepared to go head-to-head with Celtic to try and get this deal across the line.
