Leeds United interested in Bundesliga stopper

Leeds United fans will tell you that the current mood around the place is one of a sense of serenity, for a change, and one laced with a certain sense of hope.

Andrea Radrizzani’s purchase of the club has brought that feeling of stabliity to the club, a feeling that fans had long been craving. These are fans who are also enthused by the transfer dealings that the club are involved in.

The Whites have already brought in Pontus Jansson and Hadi Sacko, on permanent deals converted from initial loans, with Pole Mateusz Klich also joining the club permanently from FC Twente Enschede in Holland.

There are also rumours that two attacking options could be on their way to Elland Road with Macedonian Ezgjan Alioski and Spaniard Samu Saiz both said close to signing. Now, according to German publication Spox.com, Leeds United also have their eyes cast to Germany for their next potential target.

Spox say that United are one of a number of sides from the Sky Bet Championship said to be interested in 27-year-old Werder Bremen stopper Felix Wiedwald after the keeper “asked SV Werder Bremen for his release.” Spox go on to say that Wiedwald has expressed a desire to move abroad and that Leeds United are one of the clubs “mentioned.”

The Thedinghausen-born stopper started his career at Werder Bremen, after coming from youth side TSV Achim, progressing through the Bremen youth set-up and then on into the first team squad in 2010.

A year later he was transferred to MSV Duisberg, before a free transfer to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in 2013. Two years later he found himself back on familiar ground at Bremen, joining from Frankfurt on another free transfer deal.

Last season he turned out 29 times for Bremen in the Bundesliga, conceding 49 goals and keeping just the five clean sheets. His desire to move is thought to have come about after seeing that Bremen are bringing in potential newcomer Jiri Pavlenka from Sparta Prague. Alongside Pavlenka would be Wiedwald himself and Jaroslav Drobny, the competition for places likely being one of the motives behind a desire to move on.

Should a move firm up beyond this stage of speculation, Wiedwald would enter into a competition for places with current #1 Rob Green, back-up Marco Silvestri and rated youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
