Leeds United are set to battle Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town to sign Granada defender Sverrir Ingason, according to The Sun.
The 23-year-old Icelandic defender became a national hero when his performances for the Icelandic national team at Euro 2016 fired Iceland into the quarter-finals after a 2-1 victory over England which shocked the footballing world.
In January he signed for Spanish outfit Granada, making 17 appearances for the La Liga club, but he was unable to help Tony Adams’ men avoid the drop from the Spanish top flight.
Beginning his career in his native Iceland with Breidablik, he made 42 appearances for the club before moving to Norwegian side Viking in 2014.
After one season with Viking, he made the switch to Belgian Pro League outfit Sporting Lokeren, where he established himself as one of the division’s most capable centre-halves, whilst also nailing down a place in the Icelandic national team.
Now Championship giants Leeds United are trying to snap up the Icelandic international, as Thomas Christiansen searches for a long-term replacement for Kyle Bartley, who returned to parent club Swansea, but looks set to join Garry Monk at Middlesbrough to replace Ben Gibson, who’s departure seems inevitable.
However, Leeds face competition from newly-promoted Huddersfield Town, who are looking to bring in potential cover for German defensive duo Michael Hefele and Christopher Schindler.
David Wagner has moved quick to add to his squad, bringing in Laurent Depoitre for a club record fee, as well as negotiating deals for Aaron Mooy, Izzy Brown and Danny Williams, but he is set for a tough battle to snap up Ingason, who is rated at £2 million.
