Former Derby County midfielder on shortlist for Oxford United job

Former Derby County midfielder John Eustace is on the shortlist to replace Michael Appleton as Oxford United manager, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun.

Oxford United are currently looking for a new boss following the departure of Michael Appleton last week.  Appleton, who had been in charge since 2014, decided to leave Oxford to become assistant manager to Craig Shakespeare at Premier League side Leicester City.

Oxford have therefore been drawing up a shortlist of managers to replace Appleton and it is understood that Kidderminster Harriers boss John Eustace has made the list.

Since being appointed as manager last summer, Eustace has won 30 of his 51 games in charge and has a win percentage of 58.82%.  He also led the club to a second place finish in his first season as a manager, but they went down 1-2 to Chorley in the play-offs so will stay in the Conference North.

Eustace began his career with Coventry City before making the move to Stoke City in 2003.  He went on to make 84 appearances for the club before signing for Watford for £250,000 in January 2008.  The midfielder made 168 appearances for The Hornets, scoring 16 goals in six seasons.

He then made the move to Derby County and was initially meant to be a bit-part player.  However, he made 39 appearances in his first season with the club and was a key player.  In January, 2015, Eustace picked up a serious knee injury which ruled him out for the rest of the season.  He was released in June 2015.

After only one season as a manager, Eustace could be set to make the move up to League One to manage Oxford United.  Despite Eustace being only one name on a shortlist, it is impressive that clubs in higher divisions are already starting to take notice of his management career.
