Ex-Bayern boss in running for Sunderland job if German consortium take over

The Sun understands that if Sky Bet Championship side Sunderland are taken over by a German consortium, then Jurgen Klinsmann is in the running to become the next manager. The Mackems are in talks over the sale of the club and they are willing to view the 52-year-old a chance to get back into management.

Klinsmann is of course no stranger to English football on the back of his two spells with Tottenham Hotspur as a player in the 1990s. The one-time legendary striker was last in the dugout as boss of the United States National Team, where he was sacked in November 2016 following a bad run of results. Union Berlin manager Jens Keller, another German, is another candidate to possibly be considered for the vacancy too.

Current owner Ellis Short is said to want £85million to relinquish control of the relegated club. Should the German consortium fall through, then an American group are said to be willing to step in and discuss a potential offer as well. Preston North End manager Simon Grayson would be considered by them. Carl Robinson, the current manager of MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, is another name that they are considering if required.

In the case of Klinsmann, he has mainly served as a national team boss in his coaching career. This is of course with the exception of the 2008/09 campaign, where he served as manager of German giants Bayern Munich. He didn’t complete the season as he was dismissed in April with the club sitting off the pace in third, and were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. That is a completely different world to the Sky Bet Championship, but he would surely be willing to discuss the role, especially if he was promised funds.
