Notts County enter talks to sign Wigan Athletic defender

Notts County are about to enter talks to sign Wigan Athletic’s Jake Buxton according to a tweet from their chairman Alan Hardy.

The 32-year-old defender just spent the year with Wigan and while he was a regular for the Latics, it ended up being a poor season for him as he was unable to stop the club from being relegated back to Sky Bet League One. Following their drop back down to the third tier of English football, Buxton was released and now he is looking to find a new club.

And he may be set to head back to the East Midlands as he is set to enter talks with Notts County. Their chairman Alan Hardy has revealed on twitter that they were set to meet on Friday lunch time and talk about him potentially joining the club. However even though they are going to talk about Buxton becoming a Magpie, Hardy isn’t hopeful that anything will happen. He believes that Buxton will be staying in the Championship and that it would be a huge coup if County did manage to get him.

If Notts County do manage to sign Buxton, they will be signing a very experienced defender. After coming through the Mansfield Town academy, he would end up becoming a key player for the Stags before his eventual move to Burton Albion in 2008. After a year there, he would make a big move to Derby where he would become a crucial squad player in his seven years there. He would move to Wigan in 2016 before becoming a free agent this summer.
