Doidge, Warne states Rotherham remain interested in promotion-winning striker

Warne states Rotherham remain interested in promotion-winning striker

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Rotherham United manager Paul Warne confirms that his side remain interested in Forest Green Rovers striker Christian Doidge. An initial offer was rejected by the newly-promoted Sky Bet League Two side, but Warne hinted that a fresh offer is in the pipeline.

This comes less than 24 hours after it was revealed by the Oxford Mail that Oxford United have seen a bid for the 24-year-old turned down too. Oxford are now of course without a manager after Michael Appleton decided to become assistant manager at Leicester City. However Doidge could still be on the move to Sky Bet League One with Rotherham.

That being said, Mark Cooper will be determined to keep Doidge at The New Lawn following their historic promotion campaign last season. Doidge netted 27 times in their victorious season, which resulted in them defeating Tranmere Rovers in the promotion final at Wembley.

Warne says he has always maintained he is a fan of Doidge and that he could still be a new signing at the New York Stadium this summer,

“Yeah, I like him. I’ve said since day one I like him. We put an offer in for him which got turned down. We’re still in the process of deciding our next move.

“It was unlucky for me because we’ve liked him since Christmas and then me and Hammy (coach Matt Hamshaw) went to watch him in the play-off final. He had a great game as a Number Nine and scored a great goal and they got promoted.

“I left Wembley that day pretty dejected because I thought it would be a lot harder getting a player out of a promoted team in League Two, and they’re not a poor League Two team either. I do like him, but I don’t know which way it is going to go. We’re still pursuing it.”
