Harry Maguire, Should he stay or go?

Harry Maguire has been the centre of all transfer controversy so far. He has run into the final year of his contract with the Blades and this has lead a series of Championship clubs to take interest in the Centre back.

At 21 years old, Maguire has made 133 appearances for Sheffield United, the club where he spent 5 years of his youth career. He first made his debut back in 2011 when the Blades were fighting relegation from the Championship. With Maguire at the time only being 18 years old, it was a big step up for him and during the game he impressed after coming on as a substitute. He went on to make more appearances during that season including a man of the match performance.

Maguire then since the clubs relegation has developed rapidly and become an integral part of the team. In the 2011/12 season, he saw himself score his first goal, earn a new contract as well as the clubs player and young player of the season. He also saw himself included in several ‘Team of the Years’ including BBC’s Match Of The Day magazine.

In the previous few seasons, Maguire has been an ever present in the Blades’ team and has been a fantastic young player. This season he has scored 7 goals as a Centre back and has been defensively solid and very strong, with such a long career ahead of him, the bigger clubs are now showing interest in him.

His options;

Wolves

Since their promotion to the Championship, Kenny Jackett has looked to reinforce his squad and improve it. According to the Express and Star he has apparently made a £1 Million bid for Maguire. With Wolves only just promoted and momentum on their side, it may be a very good move for young Maguire, to partner up with Danny Batth in the heart of the defence. Being around players such as Sam Ricketts and Richard Stearman may help to improve Maguire’s technical ability and gain experience next to such strong defenders who have played across a variety of divisions. After luring Kevin McDonald to Molineux from Sheffield, Jackett looks keen to do the same now with Maguire and after the season McDonald has had, it may be a great move for Maguire.

Leeds

Reports have it from HITC Sport  that Leeds are apparently looking to strengthen at the back by signing Maguire. They are also looking at capturing the signature of another target for Wolves, Dean Moxey. Moxey has just left Crystal Palace and is now free to be signed by a range of clubs. If Leeds were to sign Maguire, their new owner will surely have a plethora of wealth to pay Maguire reasonably high wages. Maguire will also surely benefit by playing along some players of the finest caliber and playing Championship football in one of the biggest grounds in the country weekly.

Sheffield United

He could also renew his contract with Sheffield. Since Nigel Clough’s takeover at the club, United have undergone a real resurgence and since reaching the FA Cup semi-finals have really improved in the league. They are real title contenders for this new season coming up and since Maguire has been with the club now for eight years, he may want to stay with them through another season to see if they can earn promotion.  (

With Sheffield looking to sign Andy Butler after he left Walsall, it looks like Clough is preparing for Maguire’s imminent departure.

Prediction; I believe that Wolves will secure his service for next season.
