Middlesbrough join race to sign Derby County defender

Middlesbrough are the latest team to become interested in Derby County’s Cyrus Christie according to a report from the Daily Telegraph.

The last few days has seen reports emerge that Christie may be about to leave the Rams with some of Derby’s Sky Bet Championship rivals becoming interested in him. These reports indicated that the likes of QPR and Reading were closely looking at the defender and may make a move for him at some point during this transfer window.

But they aren’t the only team that is interested in Christie. Now relegated Middlesbrough are looking into signing him as they hope to revamp their squad following the appointment of Garry Monk as head coach. He wants the club to instantly challenge for promotion following their relegation from the Premier League last season and is looking to completely change the squad to make sure that happens. And with Christie being proven at this level having played for Coventry City before moving to Derby in 2014, he seems like the ideal fit.

While there has been no indication that Derby are willing to sell a key defender, their head coach Gary Rowett has been looking to do a revamp of his own after a disappointing season last year. And with Christie only having a year left on his current deal, the club may be willing to part with him. They say that Derby have told the teams interested in signing him that they will have to pay £1.5m, a fee most of these teams would be willing to pay for a proven defender.
