Play-Off finalists Reading are now 7/2 favourites to sign Newcastle United striker Daryl Murphy with Sky Bet.
The Irish striker looks certain to move on after finding himself behind Dwight Gayle, Ayoze Perez and Aleksander Mitrovic in the pecking order following Newcastle United’s promotion to the Premier League as champions.
It appears that Reading could well be his next destination, with Sky Bet pricing The Royals as 7/2 favourites to sign the former Celtic striker.
Jaap Stam is looking to add a new striker to the ranks at the Madejski following their Play-Off final disappointment last season, where they drew 0-0 over 120 minutes against Huddersfield Town, but went on to lose 4-3 on penalties.
One of the factors holding Stam’s side back last season was the lack of a second striker who would regularly get on the score sheet. Yann Kermorgant’s 19 goal return was the best of his career, but Lewis Grabban’s loan spell brought little to the table, and Joseph Mendes never got a proper run in the side despite showing glimpses.
That’s not to say Reading don’t have goals in their team – Garath McCleary, John Swift and Roy Beerens all scored 7 or more from midfield and Joseph Mendes showed what he can do against Aston Villa and Burton.
Should Murphy emulate his 2014-15 season performances that saw him named as Golden Boot winner following a 27-goal return, this signing could prove to be a masterstroke and could fire Reading to promotion.
However, at 33 years of age, it’s hard to see what Murphy offers that Yann Kermorgant can’t.
