Charlie Taylor of Leeds United has been linked with a move away from Elland Road for a couple of years, such is his pedigree and potential.

However, upheaval caused by handing in a transfer request and a refusal to play in last season’s final game against Wigan Athletic have soured the relationship between player and club, to the degree that he will not report back for pre-season training.

The current favorites to sign him are Burnley which leads us nicely into the first potential option.

1) Stephen Ward

Burnley’s Stephen Ward is a very talented full back who had an excellent Premier League campaign last season. The Irishman, who made 37 Premier League appearances last season, also has bags and bags of experience in the Championship with Burnley, Wolves and Brighton having made 196 Championship appearances as well as 140 Premiership appearances. If Taylor was to make the move west to the Lancashire club it would surely push Ward out the door at Burnley and Ward’s experience could massively improve Leeds’s defence especially in the Championship.

2) Sébastien Pocognoli

Pocognoli of West Brom was on loan at Brighton last season making a total of 20 league appearances in that time. While at Brighton he didn’t make too much of an impact but during his period with Brighton he showed glimpses of what he is actually capable of. This includes an absolutely stunning free kick against QPR towards the end of the season. Although a few of years older than Charlie Taylor the Belgian defender is similar in many ways to Taylor and could be a great option if Taylor was to leave

3) George Friend

The 29-year-old Englishman has been linked with a move away from Boro ever since Garry Monk took over. Friend won promotion with Boro back in 2016 but he lost in the squad during the second half of last season. With Monk wanting to bring Taylor up to the North-East it’s clear that Friend’s future doesn’t lay at his current employers. George Friend impressed many in Boro’s 15/16 promotion campaign and is one of the best and most consistent full backs going in the Championship. He is also very attacking just like Charlie Taylor and would fit into the side perfectly.
