Birmingham City to join rivals in race for Barnsley defender

Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp is thought to be continuing to weigh up a move for Barnsley captain Marc Roberts according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 26-year-old Barnsley born centre-back is believed to have been on the Blues manager’s radar for a number of weeks as recently reported by The72 and Redknapp could finally be set to move for the player in the coming days.

Birmingham City are keen to sign a new central defender this summer and while they have reportedly made an ambitious move for veteran Chelsea defender John Terry, Barnsley ace Roberts could be a more realistic target. Redknapp is said to have discussed a move for the player with the Blues hierarchy and could now press on with plans to persuade Roberts to join his revolution at St Andrews.

After a string of impressive performances for The Tykes, Roberts has attracted transfer interest from a whole host of clubs including Birmingham City’s Midlands rivals Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion while Burnley are also  thought to be admirers of the experienced campaigner.

Roberts started his career in non league football with Wakefield before rising through the footballing pyramid with Worksop Town, Buxton and FC Halifax Town. The centre-back’s performances for The Shaymen attracted attention from Barnsley and the player joined the South Yorkshire club two years ago.
