Rovers striker has slight hope of a return to Hibernian

Blackburn Rovers striker Anthony Stokes may have a glimmer of hope of ending his Ewood Park misery with former club Hibernian possibly now able to fund a return to Easter Road.

The 28-year-old Dublin born frontman has made just 12 appearances for Rovers since joining the club from Glasgow giants Celtic last summer while he has netted just three goals.

Stokes’ lack of positive contribution to the cause at the Lancashire club could see Rovers boss Tony Mowbray try to offload the player this summer with the club looking to secure a swift return back to English football’s second tier. The fact that Stokes has two years remaining on his Rovers contract could be a huge hurdle for any potential admirers to overcome should they wish to sign the player.

Former club Hibernian are thought to be keen to land Stokes on a permanent deal after the player helped the club to Scottish Cup glory during a short loan spell from Celtic last season while an initial one-year spell at Easter Road back in 2009/2010 saw the striker bag 23 goals in 43 appearances for The Hibees.

It has previously been reported that Hibernian failed to sign the player in January while coming to a financial agreement over the remainder of Stokes’ contract at Ewood Park was thought to be a major stumbling block over a potential deal earlier this summer. Hibernian have now pocketed over £1 million from Jason Cummings’ move to Nottingham Forest and it would be no surprise to see some of that fee used to try to secure a successful move for Rovers striker Stokes.
