Looking back: The 3 highest scoring Championship games from 2016/17

The 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season may now be done and dusted, but it is only right we look back on some of the more entertaining moments. Whilst the three joint-highest scoring games from that campaign won’t bring back fond memories for some, they were all rip-roaring clashes to say the least!

Interestingly enough, all of the nine teams that were involved in these three matches will still be in the division next season. Two of them reached the Championship play-offs, whilst the remainder can mainly be found in mid-table. Therefore, we’ll look back on those matches, and provide a video of highlights for you to gander over as well!

The first match we’ll be looking back on came on December 10th 2016 when Fulham travelled to Wolves.

Final score: Wolverhampton Wanderers 4 – 4 Fulham

This game may have seemed quite a while ago, but Paul Lambert was actually manager at this time! This was the post-Walter Zenga era at Molineux, but Lambert was searching for his second victory at the helm having just recorded his first against Queens Park Rangers. Wolves were outside the bottom three at this stage, whilst Fulham weren’t in the play-off picture just yet, sitting a few points outside the top six.

Kortney Hause put the home side ahead after 22 minutes, but the rest of the first half completely belonged to the visitors from down south. Strikes from Stefan Johansen, Floyd Ayite and Tom Cairney ensured Fulham took a 3-1 advantage into the interval in front of 19.020 crowd in attendance.

A crazy second half would materialise. It took a while for Wolves to get back into stride, but Matt Doherty did pull one back after 65 minutes. This game them real momentum as Ivan Cavaleiro made it 3-3 about ten minutes afterwards. Wolves seemed the more likelier team to win it, and David Edwards thought he did when putting Wolves ahead for the second time in the 90th minute. However Ayite popped up with his second with one of the last kicks to round off a 4-4 draw.

Speaking to the BBC afterwards, Lambert described the match as ‘heart-attack material’, whilst opposite number Slavisa Jokanovic simply said his side ‘have to improve’. Conidering they made the play-offs, it would be fair to say that they did! Highlights of that game can be seen below, whilst you can switch to the next page to see the next highest scoring match of the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season!
