Birmingham midfielder too expensive for Scottish clubs

Birmingham City’s Greg Stewart will be staying with Birmingham as his wages are too expensive for the Scottish clubs interested, according to the Courier.

The Blues have had a number of Scottish clubs register interest in the attacking midfielder, but Stewart’s wages are proving too hefty a demand for them to offer.

The clubs interested in Harry Redknapp’s midfielder include Aberdeen, Dundee, Motherwell, Hearts and Hibernian, but Stewart’s large wage demands are causing talks to break down between Birmingham and the other parties interested.

27-year-old Stewart made the move to St Andrew’s last August for £500,000 from Dundee and made 22 appearances during which he failed to find the net, but his impressive performances during his debut season with the Blues meant that numerous clubs became interested in the attacking midfielder.

Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp told SunSport that “Clubs have asked for Greg – Aberdeen, Motherwell and Dundee.

“It’s only a loan for the season that I’ve been asked about.

“But Greg’s wages at Birmingham are too high for the Scottish clubs, even the percentage that we’d be looking for.

“So for now he’s not going anywhere, although I’m sure there are clubs in England who would take Greg for a year on his current wages.

“I liked what I saw of Greg last season, although I was only in the job for a couple of weeks.

“He was on the bench for me and he is a great lad with good ability.

“I’ll look at him closely during pre-season then we’ll see what happens.”
