Sheffield Wednesday targeting £3m rated South African midfielder

Sheffield Wednesday are looking at making a move for Vitoria Guimaraes’ Bongani Zungu according to a report from Portuguese publication A Bola.

While the Owls did have an impressive season, improving on the previous year by finishing in 4th place in the Sky Bet Championship, it would once again end in heartbreak after losing on penalties to Huddersfield Town in the play-off semi-finals. The forthcoming season will be the third full season under Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership and he is once again set to give head coach Carlos Carvalhal a large budget to make sure they finally get promoted to the Premier League.

And Carvalhal is looking towards his home country of Portugal for a potential signing. They have been having a close look at Zungu, a South African defensive midfielder who is currently contracted to Vitoria Guimaraes. The 24-year-old midfielder was a revelation in his first ever season in Europe, he only signed for Vitoria last season from South African side Mamelodi Sundowns last summer, and ended up being one of the stars for the season. But as you’d expect, the suitors are now circling and Wednesday is one of the teams that could make an offer, though it would have to be around the £3m mark as that is the valuation Guimaraes have put on him.

However there are a few issues that could end up stopping Zungu from wearing the famous blue and white stripes. Because Zungu’s native South Africa is outside of the FIFA Top 50 Rankings, he may struggle to get a work permit to play in England, though it would not be impossible.
