The Sheffield Star understands that Rotherham United are interested in signing free agent midfielder Ryan Williams. He was released by Barnsley at the end of last season following a two-year permanent spell at Oakwell.
Rotherham have already signed another midfielder in the form of ex-MK Dons man Darren Potter on a two-year deal. Millers boss Paul Warne is focusing his attentions on Williams at this moment, believing he could be a man to improve his squad before the Sky Bet League One season commences.
The 23-year-old Australian has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons, in addition to falling down the pecking order at Barnsley. This restricted him to just five league starts over the past two seasons after a successful loan spell was made permanent by the South Yorkshire club. Nevertheless, Warne is particularly keen on adding more flair to his side and Williams certainly adds that.
Warne recently stated that he is ‘making no end of phone calls’ as he looks to add fresh faces to a team which endured a dismal campaign last season, finishing rock bottom in the Sky Bet Championship.
Williams came through the ranks at Portsmouth, before making the move to Fulham in 2012. He struggled to make an impact at Craven Cottage, spending time out on loan at Gillingham, Oxford United and then Barnsley. Last season he made 17 appearances for Barnsley in their first season back in the Sky Bet Championship under head coach Paul Heckingbottom. He scored once in that time, coming in the epic 4-3 away win over Cardiff City last December. Highlights, including Williams’ last gasp winning goal, can be seen in the video below.
