Celtic defender set to become first summer signing for Bristol City

The Scottish Sun reports that out of favour Celtic full back Saidy Janko is poised to complete a move to Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City. He spent last season on loan in the division at rivals Barnsley, but is now set for a permanent switch to English football.

Janko hasn’t appeared in a Celtic shirt since August 2016 in the 2-0 away defeat at Hapoel Beer Sheva in a UEFA Champions League qualification clash. After initially playing seven games under Brendan Rodgers, he would be shipped out on loan to the Tykes for the remainder of the campaign.

The Swiss defender, who can also play in a winger role, played 14 times in his loan stint last season, which was much less than hoped as he injury ruled him out between mid-December and early April. Nevertheless, he is needed at Ashton Gate as head coach Lee Johnson has made changes to his squad this summer already. Mark Little has been allowed to leave and Adam Matthews’ loan from Sunderland ended too. This meant that the need for a new right back was obvious, with just young Zak Vyner on the books.

Johnson is therefore understandably keen to recruit the 21-year-old, who not only offers defensive qualities but is a threat in attack too. He scored in Barnsley’s excellent 4-0 away win at Wolverhampton Wanderers back in September 2016, and highlights can be seen in the video below.

Janko is still under contract with Celtic until 2019, but was signed by previous manager Ronny Deila. He is therefore surplus to requirements with the Scottish treble winners, and Bristol City are set to win the race for his signature. Sheffield Wednesday and Reading were both said to be monitoring the situation with interest too.
