Nottingham Forest are understood to be set to compete the signing of Blackburn Rovers winger Connor Mahoney according to the Nottingham Post.

The 20-year-old Blackburn born wideman has impressed for Rovers since breaking into the first team picture on a more frequent basis last season.

Mahoney made 14 league appearances for the Lancashire club as they lost their battle against relegation to Sky Bet League One and with the player out of contract at Ewood Park this summer, the winger has rejected the offer of a new deal in a bid to play at a higher level.

The youngster is not short of admirers with Barnsley, Blackburn Rovers, Celtic and Sunderland all thought to have been keen to sign Mahoney however it has been revealed that Nottingham Forest are set to win the race for the player’s signature with just a medical standing in between the winger and signing on at The City Ground.

As the player is under the age of 23, The Reds will be required to pay a compensation fee to Blackburn Rovers although that sum may need to be decided by a tribunal should the two clubs not come to an agreement.

Mahoney signed for Rovers from Accrington Stanley in December 2013 and the player has gone on to make 24 senior appearances for the club.
