Sheffield United have held discussions with Celtic over the prospect of signing midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven. The Sheffield Star also understands that those talks are to continue on a more formal level.

Celtic’s Ladbrokes Premiership rivals Aberdeen were believed to be keen on making their own move for Mackay-Steven, but it is now believed they have cooled this interest. This means that the Blades can now really push on to get a deal over the line in the coming weeks. Blackburn Rovers however are monitoring the situation as well.

Manager Chris Wilder has already been busy this summer in terms of player recruitment. Ched Evans, Nathan Thomas and Enda Stevens have all come through the door at Bramall Lane as they prepare for life in the Sky Bet Championship following their title triumph last season.

Mackay-Steven, who turns 27 in August, only appeared ten times for Brendan Rodgers’ side last season in all competitions. This includes the Champions League away draw at Manchester City in December. He remains under contract for a further two seasons at Celtic Park, but Rodgers surely won’t stand in his way should he wish to depart.

It is believed that Celtic rate the player at approximately £500,000-£750,000. It remains to be seen if Sheffield United will pay a fee of this nature, otherwise they may try their luck at tempted the player away on a season-long loan deal. The player himself will surely be keen on playing much more regularly than he has been doing should he wish to break into Gordon Strachan’s thinking for the Scotland national team.
