Aston Villa told to pay £300K more for Stoke City midfielder

Aston Villa have been told they must pay £300K more if they want to sign Stoke City’s Glenn Whelan according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Even though Whelan has been a mainstay of the Stoke squad since signing for them from Sheffield Wednesday in 2008, it does seem his time at the club is coming to an end. The Potters have signed Darren Fletcher from West Bromwich Albion and that means they no longer need the republic of Ireland international and the club are happy to sell to a club willing to pay up for him.

And the team that is looking to sign Whelan is Aston Villa who are hoping to improve their central midfield ahead of a season where they expect to be challenging for promotion. But they have already hit one issue in the deal as their first bid for the midfielder was rejected. They were hoping to seal a bargain move for him by making an offer worth £500K but Stoke have turned that down.

But there is still hope for the Villains and their pursuit of Whelan as Stoke have told them that if they do want to sign him, they just need up offer their offer a bit. They have told the West Midlands club that they need to just pay £300K more and they would allow personal talks to begin between the player and Villa. It seems like something the club would be willing to pay as they have spent far more in the past, though due to his age Whelan would only be a short-term fix which somewhat limits his value.
