Middlesbrough could lose midfielder to Serie A side Lazio

According to Football Italia, Lazio have identified Middlesbrough midfielder Marten de Roon as one of their top transfer targets this season.

The Dutch midfielder was one of the stand out players for Boro during their unsuccessful Premier League campaign, which saw them relegated to the Sky Bet Championship.

De Roon has never played in the second tier, and it is unknown whether he would be willing to do so with Middlesbrough.

He cost Boro a fee reported to be in the region of £12million when he joined the club last July, and the club are expecting to receive a similar amount of money if he is to leave the club.

Marten de Roon has experience in the top flight of Italy before. He actually moved to England from Serie A club Atlanta, where he enjoyed a successful 2015/16 season.

Prior to that, he was playing football in his native Holland, where he played 58 games for Sparta Rotterdam and 94 for Heerenveen.

One thing that could attract De Roon to Lazio is the prospect of European football next season.

The Italian giants qualified for the Europa League last season, meaning that De Roon would have the chance to show his abilities on a European scale.

The Dutch midfielder has recently been involved in the national squad for the first time. He made his debut in November 2016, and is expected to be a prominent feature for the rest of World Cup qualifying.

De Roon’s most memorable moment in a Middlesbrough shirt came at the Etihad Stadium, when a 91st minute header helped his side steal a draw from Manchester City.
