Tony Mowbray signs new contract with Blackburn Rovers

Tony Mowbray has signed a two year contract extension with Blackburn Rovers, taking him to the end of the 18/19 season.

Despite taking Rovers down to League One, Mowbray gave survival a valiant effort after taking over in February. A good spell towards the end of the season meant that they went in to the final day behind only on goal difference. Unfortunately for them, a 3-1 win away at Brentford couldn’t keep them up as both Birimingham City and Nottingham Forest also came out with three points.

Fans have taken to the ex-West Bromwich Albion and Celtic boss since his arrival so will undoubtedly be pleased he has committed to the club on a more permanent basis. He has hinted that his main aim for the season is promotion back to the Championship and nothing else will be accepted.

He’s got experience in League One management with his eighteen months spent at Coventry City which came to an end in September when he resigned. He left the Sky Blues winless at the bottom of the table and after leaving suggested that owners SISU were one of the main reasons he walked. However he went from one ownership troubled club to another with Blackburn and the Venkys.

A big summer transfer window is needed for Mowbray and Rovers if they want to bounce back to the second tier at the first time of asking, something which he didn’t have at Coventry last summer. His budget however should be a lot larger than at the Sky Blues, giving him and newly appointed assistant Mark Venus more room to manoeuvre.
