Sheffield Wednesday interested in Newcastle United defender

Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley.

The Scottish international looked set to join Derby County, but it seems that the move to the Rams has fallen through, and the Owls have now decided to swoop in for the central defender.

The Shields Gazette reports that Carlos Carvalhal is looking to strengthen his defensive options, and Hanley is at the top of his shortlist.

Also on the Portuguese manager’s list is Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala.

Hanley is one of the unfortunate players that looks set to leave Newcastle United this season as Rafa Benitez begins to prepare his squad for their return to the Premier League.

The Magpies won the Sky Bet Championship title this season, edging out Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season, but Hanley failed to make a real impact on Tyneside following his move to the club last summer.

Hanley joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers for a fee believed to be in the region of £6million following a successful couple of seasons at Ewood Park.

His credibility certainly remains as a second tier defender, and he looks set to join a club hoping to mount a challenge for promotion next season.

Sheffield Wednesday have fallen short in the last two seasons. The previous campaign saw them lose on penalties to Huddersfield Town in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi Final, whilst the season before the Owls reached Wembley before losing to Hull City in the final.
