Sky Bet League Two side Crawley Town have confirmed that Harry Kewell’s first game as manager will be a pre-season fixture against Premier League champions Chelsea. To be precise, it is a ‘Chelsea XI’, which will appear a week before the top flight side head out for a pre-season tour of Singapore.
The game itself shall take place at the Checkatrade Stadium on Saturday July 15th. Kick-off will be 3pm, but the club are planning on turning it into a family day, with plenty of activities set to commence from 12noon. It remains to be seen what strength of side Chelsea shall field.
It is unlikely to be a full strength Chelsea team, highlighted by the fact that it is a Chelsea ‘XI’. Nevertheless, it shall present Kewell’s new team with an excellent test prior to their league season commencing. If tickets are bought in advance of matchday, it will cost just £1! These go on sale from 9am on Monday June 26th.
Former Leeds United and Liverpool midfielder Kewell has been at the helm with the West Sussex side since his appointment late last month. This made him the first ever Australian manager to appear in the English professional game. It is his first senior management role after previously working with the Watford Under-21 side, a job which he left earlier this year. He’ll certainly get a good measure of where his side are at when a talented Chelsea squad come to town, although it is mainly a fitness exercise like all pre-season fixtures generally are.
