Cardiff reject £3 million bid from Sheffield Wednesday for key defender

Cardiff City have rejected a £3 million bid from Play-Off semi-finalists Sheffield Wednesday for centre-back Sean Morrison, according to Sky Sports.

Morrison was one of the standout performers in a sub-par season for the Welsh side, featuring 46 times in all competitions and playing all but two of Cardiff’s league games.

The former Swindon and Huddersfield Town centre-half has established himself as a consistent performer and the shining star in a Cardiff backline that conceded 61 league goals this season.

Morrison established himself as a Championship quality centre-back during his stint at Reading which span between 2011 and 2014, and since joining Cardiff in 2014, the former Southend loanee has made 114 appearances for the Bluebirds.

His knack of contributing down the other end of the field has also caught the eye, having netted 13 times for Cardiff since arriving in Wales.

Neil Warnock will be desperate to keep hold of Morrison, who will be integral to his plans for next season, however, after such a convincing season in a Cardiff side distinctly lacking a talisman, his stock has understandably risen.

It will be a long summer for Warnock who is tasked with holding onto Morrison and star striker Kenneth Zohore as well as building for next season.

His first major challenge will be fending off interest from Sheffield Wednesday, who are looking to bolster their squad after suffering heartbreak in the Play-Offs once more, crashing out in the semi-finals to eventual winners Huddersfield on penalties.

The initial bid of £3 million has been rejected by the Welsh club, but it is highly likely that Wednesday will come back in for the former Reading defender.
