Birmingham City are the latest team to be linked with a move for Barnsley’s Marc Roberts according to a report from Daily Mirror journalist James Nursey.
Roberts has been linked with several teams over the last few months thanks to his performances as Barnsley reached a safe mid-table place in the Sky Bet Championship following their promotion via the play-offs last season. The two teams said to be leading the race are Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion with the latter being interested in signing him since the January transfer window.
And now Birmingham have joined the race to sign Roberts. This is a huge statement of intent from the Blues as in previous seasons they had a low budget and had to scrape around to make transfers. However thanks to the takeover that happened during the season, they now have a healthy budget and will be able to invest heavily in their squad to make sure they are challenging for a place in the play-offs.
But even with Birmingham said to have a bigger budget than usual, it is likely that they are still behind Aston Villa and West Brom in the chase to sign Roberts. The Villains seem more prepared to make a push for promotion after Birmingham barely survived last season while West Brom are already in the Premier League, meaning it would be a great chance for the defender to establish himself in the top division without going through the tough effort of getting promoted with either Birmingham or Villa.
