Blackburn Rovers forward to reject new deal and remain in the Championship

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that Connor Mahoney is to reject a new contract offer from relegated Blackburn Rovers. It is also believed that he is set to remain in the Sky Bet Championship, signing a deal with an unnamed club.

Rovers would be entitled to a fee as Mahoney is under the age of 24, and has been offered an extension at Ewood Park. Failure to mutual agree a price between the two parties would lead to it being forwarded onto a tribunal.

Although he only made 18 appearances last season in the first team, most being as a substitute, Mahoney is still seen as an important player at the club. Even more so considering they are relegated and he was likely to be a regular under Tony Mowbray next season. Nevertheless, he is set to seek pastures new at a higher level, which he cannot necessarily be blamed for.

Mahoney made his Rovers debut back in January 2014 in a 5-0 away defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup. This came shortly after arriving from Accrington Stanley, with whom he played six times before his big move. The 20-year-old was offered a new deal at the end of last season, but Mowbray himself admitted that he would be surprised if he were able to retain the services of talented Mahoney. In the conversation between the two, Mowbray told Mahoney that he needs to be playing at this stage in his career, hinting that moving elsewhere could see him play less. However, he is still set to be moving on in the coming weeks.
