Ineffective former Villa boss set for managerial return

Former Aston Villa manager Remi Garde is set for a return to management with the Frenchman poised to be unveiled as Standard Liege boss according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 51-year-old former Arsenal defender has been out of work since leaving Villa Park in March 2016 however Garde has been identified as the man to revive the struggling Belgian outfit.

Garde’s time as Aston Villa boss was an unsuccessful one with the Frenchman making little impact in helping the club battle against relegation from the Premier League. Villa were bottom of the table when Garde was appointed into the Villa Park hot-seat in November 2015 and the club were in the same sad position less than five months later when the former Premier League title winner was sacked.

During his time with Aston Villa, Garde won just 13% of his matches in charge with Villa winning three, drawing seven and losing 13 of their 23 matches in all competitions. Garde arrived at the club with a good reputation after winning over half of his matches as Lyon boss during a three-year spell with the Ligue 1 outfit but things didn’t work out for him at Villa Park.

Garde’s potential new job sees him take charge of a club which have been crowned Belgian champions on no less than 10 occasions while they were UEFA Europa League Quarter-Finalists just seven years ago.
