Leeds United defender Jansson says this about his future

Such was Pontus Jansson’s impact on arriving at Elland Road that Leeds United fans were soon demanding that the club sign the talented Swede on a permanent deal.

The 6ft 5in Jansson arrived at Elland Road on a season-long loan from Torino. There was the usual ‘Italian league reject’ from some elements of the Leeds supporter base. It was a low-key start for Jansson, a 1-0 Elland Road loss to close rivals Huddersfield Town.

But soon those doubts were rammed back down the doubter’s throats as consistent display after consistent display coincided with a rise up the Championship table. Leeds eventually hit the play-off places, in part due to the growing bond and coherence between Jansson and Kyle Bartley.

Fans were enraptured when it was announced that Jansson was to sign on a permanent deal, the Whites taking up the option of a redemption clause in the original loan deal with Torino. By then the big Swede was already a terrace hero with the fans, chants being sung in his honour and various phrases being coined to describe his manner of play.

Pontus Jansson talks of Leeds United future

Jansson is currently in Sweden, preparing to face France in a World Cup Qualifier, as well as readying himself to marry sweetheart Asa Thornell. Whilst there he has been training with former side Malmö to keep his fitness up, and enjoying the odd selfie with Markus Rosenberg.

As well as that, the burly centre-back has also taken the time to talk about his future and Leeds United to Swedish publication Expressen. The big point that Jansson made was that he’s aware of ‘interest’, but that he is focussed on Leeds United and making it there. Speaking to Expressen, Jansson stated: “There are new owners, new coach. So we’re having a meeting now after my wedding here at the end of June and see what they have to say.”

He went on to say that he’s aware other teams are looking saying: “I know there is interest, but I really enjoy working in Leeds and I just hope it will be a decent bet so we can take that last step up in the Premier League.

Perhaps the most telling point that Jansson puts forward when taking about Leeds United, one that will give fans a lot of hope is the following when discussing the interest from other teams: “I know there is interest, but I also know that I thrive in Leeds.”

Thrive or strive, whatever word you wish to use when talking about Pontus Jansson there is little doubting that he will play a big part at Elland Road next season.
