Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final runners-up Reading could face a huge battle to retain the services of manager Jaap Stam with the Dutchman being linked with the managerial vacancy at Ajax according to Get Reading.

The 44-year-old former Manchester United centre-back guided The Royals to within a penalty shootout of a Premier League return in his first season at the club but the Berkshire outfit were beaten by Huddersfield Town on spot kicks at Wembley.

Stam has just 12 months remaining on his current deal at The Madejski Stadium and the Dutchman has been installed as one of the early favourites for the managerial vacancy at Eredivisie giants Ajax. The former defender ended his playing career at the Amsterdam Arena while he was also an assistant to Frank de Boer during a second spell with the club and a return could appeal.

Ajax are looking for a new boss after former manager Peter Bosz left the club to join Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday and many any supporters of the Dutch club are believed to favour the appointment of Stam as the club’s new manager.

The 2016/2017 UEFA Europa League runners-up boast a talented young squad and the huge potential at the Amsterdam Arena makes the job a dream for any incoming new manager. It will be interesting to see whether Reading boss Stam can resist temptation and remain with the Sky Bet Championship club.
