Whitney, Walsall in talks with mystery goalkeeper

Walsall in talks with mystery goalkeeper

Walsall head coach Jon Whitney has revealed to the Express & Star that they are in talks to sign a new goalkeeper.

The Saddlers are currently without a number one goalkeeper at the moment after Neil Etheridge decided to leave the club at the end of his contract and jump up a division to join Cardiff City. This means that Walsall are currently on the look out to snap up a new shot stopper and fans will be heartened to hear they are currently in talks to sign a new man to play in between the sticks.

Whitney wouldn’t reveal who the goalkeeper was but said they were in discussions with the keeper though the talks hadn’t got too advanced yet. He would however reveal that they were closer to signing two other players who play as a full-back and centre-back. Whoever they are, it suggests Whitney is looking to strengthen his squad in defence as they look to make a push for the Sky Bet League One Play-offs after missing out last season.

Whitney said: “We are still in discussions,”

“We are still negotiation with a goalkeeper. But it’s not as advanced as the full-back and the centre-half.”

Walsall will also be looking at a few trialists when pre-season starts with Whitney adding when asked about that: “I am speaking to a couple to see if they can come in for a few days,”

“There is a possibility there might be a couple of non-league trialists.”

Walsall finished 14th in League One this season.
