The Sunderland Echo understands that there has been no approach from Sunderland to speak to Preston North End boss Simon Grayson over the managerial vacancy at the Stadium of Light. The odds on Grayson succeeding David Moyes heavily reduced yesterday, making him the outright favourite at one point.

The former Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Blackpool boss has been at Deepdale for a few seasons now, further enhancing his reputation in the game. That reputation has certainly improved at this level after consolidating Preston in this division after winning promotion out of Sky Bet League One via the play-offs. Sunderland remain on the lookout for a new manager.

A flurry of betting support saw Grayson overtake long time favourite Derek McInnes, the Aberdeen manager, at the top of the market. However despite this, it is understood that there has been ‘no official contact’ between the clubs or any representatives at this stage. That of course doesn’t entirely mean that Grayson is out of, or even involved in, the running for the job.

After four seasons in charge, Grayson could be tempted by a move elsewhere to try and test himself even more. He is finding it hard to assault a real push at the play-offs at this level with Preston, and Sunderland may represent a more realistic chance to do so. Then again, he has already made a new signing at Deepdale this summer in the form of Irish goal machine Sean Maguire. His plans for now appear to firmly be with Preston, until he is told otherwise. If Sunderland make an official approach, it would definitely give him a decision to make.
