Reading FC winger moves to Motherwell

Reading midfielder Craig Tanner has agreed to sign for Scottish Premier League side Motherwell FC.

Tanner has spent the last two seasons on loan at Plymouth Argyle, helping to guide them to promotion to League One this campaign. During his time at Home Park, Tanner scored 12 goals in 84 appearances.

The 22-year old midfielder leaves the Royals after spending 14 years with the club. Despite his long connections with Reading, Tanner’s opportunities were very restricted. After making his first-team début in August 2014, Tanner only made five first team appearances. He scored on his début for the club in a 3-1 victory against Newport County.

He has parted company with the club he has played for since 2003 following the expiration of his contract.

This season he has shown that he can be a very versatile player. He has featured for the Greens mainly as either an attacking midfielder or a right-winger, but he has also played as a left winger and a striker.

Tanner is a creative player who is known for his speed and dribbling capabilities. He has provided three assists this term for Argyle this season, two less assists than the five goals he created during the 2015/16 campaign.

Steve Robinson’s side will be hoping that Tanner is able to bring his creative ability to the Steelmen and help them to improve on their ninth placed finish from this season.

Motherwell have already sold winger Lionel Ainsworth to Tanner’s former side Plymouth  this summer and the signing of the Reading player is thought to be as a replacement for Ainsworth.
