As Newcastle United prepare for life back in the Premier League, they are being linked with a number of different players.
Rafa Benitez is looking to strengthen his squad following their Sky Bet Championship title victory this season, and is being linked with a move for a whole host of Premier League players.
One area that needs strengthening for Newcastle is defensively. Although their back four was solid in the second tier, the Premier League is a completely different story, and they need to improve in certain positions.
The right side of defence is a particular weak point for Benitez’s side.
They have been linked with a move for former Manchester City and Arsenal full back Bacary Sagna, but with reported weekly wages of £85,000, that could put Newcastle off a move for the French defender.
One player who could be perfect for Benitez is former Leeds United right back Sam Byram.
Byram made the move from Elland Road to join West Ham in January 2016 for an undisclosed fee.
He was a fan favourite at Leeds United, making his debut in 2012.
He played well over 100 times for the Yorkshire club after coming through their academy.
Byram’s move away from Elland Road was greeted with hostility by Leeds United fans, but he certainly made an impression on them during his time at the club.
Byram’s career at West Ham United has been far from consistent. Since joining up with the Hammers, he has only made 22 appearances.
Now, a lot of that is down to injury, and he certainly has not had the easiest few seasons, but another factor is that he just has not been in Slaven Bilic’s first team plans.
Last summer, West Ham United signed Alvaro Arbeloa, a former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender, who quickly became the first choice at the London Stadium.
Byram definitely still has a future at West Ham, but a move to Newcastle would mean he is still a Premier League player, he would most likely be first choice, and he could give his career that kick start that it perhaps needs.
