Newcastle United are interested in signing Bacary Sagna, after his contract expired at Premier League side Manchester City.

The Daily Star reports that Newcastle are one of three teams to be playing in the top flight next season who are looking to secure the signature of the former Manchester City defender.

Sagna was released from Manchester City at the end of this season when they decided not to renew his contract.

Southampton and Crystal Palace are both also said to be interested in the Frenchman.

The Daily Star reports that Sagna was on a wage of £85,0000 a week at the Etihad, so it could come down to which side is willing to match that fee.

Bacary Sagna moved to the North West in 2014, joining Manchester City on a free following the expiration of his contract at previous club Arsenal.

He has since played 54 times for the club, helping them to win the Capital One Cup among other competitions.

Sagna first moved to England in 2007, joining the Gunners for a fee believed to be in the region of £11million.

He spent seven years at the club, making 213 appearances and scoring four goals.

The experienced 34 year old also has earned an impressed 65 caps for his native France.

Newcastle United are on the search for Premier League defenders, and Sagna certainly fits the bill.

The right hand side of Newcastle’s defence is perhaps the one weak link in their team, but it seems that in Sagna they may have found their solution.
