Aston Villa have been given a boost in their chase to sign Sam Johnstone as Manchester United are looking to sign a new goalkeeper according to a report from the Daily Mail.
It has been made very clear that Aston Villa are looking to sign Johnstone on a permanent deal this summer. They had him on loan for the second half of the season and he impressed enough that they now want him back for good for next season as the Villains hope to stage a push for promotion from the Sky Bet Championship.
And it seems more likely as Manchester United are looking to sign a new goalkeeper. Fresh off the back of their Champions League victory, Real Madrid are preparing to make another big money push to sign David de Gea and fearful that this might be the year they lose him, they have drawn up a shortlist of keepers they are going to make a move for to replace him.
This could push Johnstone further down the pecking order. He is already far away from the first team as he is behind the likes of Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira in the chase for that number one jersey and even with de Gea’s departure, a new goalkeeper going ahead of him in the pecking order would be a sign that he is never going to be a regular at Old Trafford. And this gives Villa a chance to sign the shot stopper, though they would still have to pay up £5m and they will have to fend off competition from Sunderland, Leicester City and Watford.
