Leeds United manager dramatic twist – three names NOT being considered

Country lanes are notorious for having a multitude of twists and bends. However so is the ‘Leeds United to appoint new manager’ saga; with more twists coming according to Lee Sobot in the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP).

Many Leeds fans had been looking at online bookmakers such as Sky Bet where the clear ‘favourite’ seemed to be Aitor Karanka, formerly of Middlesbrough. The plot seemed to have added substance there when the Whites appointed his former colleague Victor Orta as Director of Football. Karanka started out with odds of 11/10 before dropping as short as 1/5 on  he is now at odds of 2/5 on.

The second ‘big name’ that was mooted was former Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri, who guided the Foxes to an improbable 1000/1 Premier League title last season. Ranieri came from nowhere to odds of first 8/1, before settle as short as 2/1 – his current odds now slipping slightly to 7/2.

It seemed at one point that ‘big names’ were queuing up for the job at Elland Road because former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Denmark legend Michael Laudrup came storming into recognition from beyond left-field. There were serious questions asked about his interest as he settled first on odds of 9/1 before creeping a little to 8/1 – Laudrup has now drifted out as far as 18/1.

But Lee Sobot of the YEP says this morning that bookies’ favourite Aitor Karanka isn’t even being considered by Leeds United for the Elland Road manager position. Karanka is one of a trio of names actively not being considered for the Leeds job. On this point Sobot writes: “the YEP understands that Karanka is not currently being considered for the Leeds job and that Simon Grayson and Michael Laudrup are another two managers not currently being considered.”

That, of course, begs the question of just who is. It is just over a week since Garry Monk walked away from Elland Road, there have been managerial irons in the fire. Leeds are playing a poker game here, secretively guarding their hand and offering no clear gives.

At times like this, hypothetical reasoning and supposition take over, no-one really being in the mix as to what is really happening. There is always the ‘fallback’ of Ranieri, whose odds of 7/2 suggest a strong showing, but that is obviously tempered with Karanka being odds-on, yet still not considered. Ranieri has already claimed, however, that he is not interested in the job at Leeds – he said he didn’t even know of interest.

Hopefully, this saga won’t drag on much longer and Leeds United fans might hear news via an official announcement on a new man in charge at Elland Road.
