Brentford will be hosting Southampton for a pre-season friendly this summer as confirmed by the Saints’ club website.
Most Sky Bet Championship teams are able to organise a fixture against a team seen as better for them as coaches like to give their players a stern test before the rigour of competitive football begins. And Brentford have been able to sort out a great match to warm up their players and fans for the season ahead of next year,
Southampton will be visiting Griffin Park on Saturday 22nd July in what should be an entertaining match for both sets of fans. The Saints have been able to qualify for the Europa League over the last few years and while they missed out on that this year, they still ended up finishing 8th in the Premier League, an impressive position considering their budget is dwarfed by many of their rivals.
Brentford will be hoping that a match against a team of such a high calibre, even if they do end up fielding a weakened side like some Premier League teams do when they travel to sides lower in the league ladder than them, can get them ready for what will be a tough season. After an impressive outing last season where they finished 10th, they will be hoping to get into the play-off places.
But the Bees won’t want a repeat of the last time these two teams faced off. They last came up against each other in 2011 when both teams were in Sky Bet League One with the Saints running out 3-0 thanks to goals from Adam Lallana, David Connolly and Oscar Gobern.
