Crewe Alexandra have signed Chris Porter from Colchester United on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.
Even though Porter is coming towards the twilight of his career, he is aged 33-years-old, he has still been able to get on the score sheet regularly and remains a threat. This season as Colchester narrowly missed out on a place in the Sky Bet League Two play-offs, Porter was able to score 16 goals and was the 9th highest scorer in the league this season.
However despite Colchester’s best attempts, Porter decided to turn down a contract offer from them and leave for Crewe. He has signed a two-year deal with Crewe and will now be leading their line as the Railwaymen look to challenge for a place in the play-offs. They were mediocre this season as they finished in 17th place and will be hoping that Porter’s ability in the air and recent goalscorer form can help them rise up the table as they seek a return to Sky Bet League One.
Porter will also bring with him plenty of experience from playing for a lot of clubs across the EFL. He started his career with Bury but would go on to play for clubs like Oldham Athletic, Motherwell and Sheffield United before ending up at Colchester in 2015. Throughout this time he has been involved in battles for promotion and fights against relegation and with Crewe tending to have a youthful squad thanks to their famous academy, he could become a vital asset this year.
