Sheffield United in talks with former Norwich City defender

Sky Bet League One champions Sheffield United are in talks to sign former Norwich City defender Ryan Bennett.

Bennett was released by the Canaries at the end of the season after five years with the club, and has been targeted by a number of Sky Bet Championship clubs.

And recently promoted Sheffield United have now joined the list of interested clubs, with talks beginning according to the Sheffield Star.

Blades boss Chris Wilder has made signing a central defender one of his main priorites this summer, after Ethan Ebanks-Landell returned to his parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He is still considered to be in Wilder’s plans however, and the Blades man may look to bring in both him and Bennett as he begins to prepare for life in the second tier of English football.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star about transfer plans, Wilder was giving nothing away.

He said: “I never talk about individual names. But we always try and do our recruitment properly, looking at people and their records over a period of time.”

“It’s such an important part of football that it would be wrong to do it any other way. We don’t just pick names out of a hat. We do our research here and examine all sorts of different aspects.”

Ryan Bennett is certainly an experienced defender when it comes to Sky Bet Championship football. He has appeared over 120 times for the Canaries, with 40 appearances taking place in the top flight.

He also enjoyed a spell at Peterborough United prior to his move to Carrow Road.
