It had long been mooted as an appointment in the making, but it has finally been officially announced by the club website – Spaniard Victor Orta has signed on at Leeds United as Director of Football.
The Whites have been without a person in such a similar position since Nicola Salerno quit the club in 2015, his contract finally being terminated ‘by mutual consent’. Italian Salerno, who was ostensibly only in charge of recruitment at the time, stood down in the wake of the effective sacking of then assistant manager Steve Thompson, the Italian’s signature being on the letter that informed him of his initial suspension.
Orta joins United after leaving Middlesbrough earlier this week, having joined Boro in December 2015 from Zenith St Petersburg where he helped bring in Brazilian World Cup player Hulk.
According to the Gazette Live, when signing on at former club Middlesbrough, Victor Orta came with “a weapons grade contact book,” this is something Leeds fans will be hoping is put to good use over the summer to help bring in the weapons that are needed for promotion.
Whilst they are still missing a manager, something that might hopefully change with the appointment of Orta, Leeds United fans have taken to twitter to comment on the appointment of the Spaniard.
Orta appointed by Leeds United – fans comment on Twitter
We've gone from Cellino, court cases and his crew of furniture salesmen to Radrizzani, Orta and Kinnear. That in itself is progress #lufc

Victor Orta looks like an award-winning journalist from Chile who mysteriously disappeared in early 1974… #lufc

People moaning about Orta need to remember he is replacing Mrs Cellino's furniture seller… #lufc

Surely Orta/Karanka at #LUFC next season then. We're clearly signing Diego Llorente on loan as a midfield destroyer.

After Andrea Radrizzani taking full control of Leeds United, the appointment of Victor Orta is the latest tumbler to fall into place in the Whites lock, coming after the appointments of board member Ivan Bravo and Managing Director Angus Kinnear. Many are now looking expectantly to a managerial appointment sooner, rather than later.
